Food industry
As a lubricant expert for the food, beverage and animal feed industries, TUNAP offers you high-performance specialty lubricants with NSF-H1 registration.
Our high-performance, food-grade portfolio of release agents, lubricants, cleaners and surface protection products has been specially developed for the food and beverage industry. In addition to the technical requirements, the focus is on hygiene, product safety and certification.
What are H1 lubricants?
H1 lubricants are food grade lubricants. They are used where there may be occasional or technically unavoidable contact between the lubricant and food products. Food-grade greases are mainly used for the care and moisture protection of machine parts, especially when they run under difficult conditions (cold, heat, steam, water).
The requirements for lubricating greases for the food and beverage industry are as varied as the food itself. Some production takes place at extremely high temperatures of over 200°C or extremely low temperatures of down to -40°C. In order to protect metal or plastic surfaces, the lubricants used often have to be adhesive, resistant to acids and alkalis and resistant to water and surfactants in addition to being temperature-resistant.
Food safety for consumers
As lubricants in the food and beverage industry can come into contact with food products, they must be food compatible and particularly safe for consumers. They must
- comply with food regulations,
- physiologically flawless,
- be odorless, colorless and tasteless and
- must not provide a habitat for microorganisms.
Food suitability and certifications of our lubricants
TUNAP products used in the food and beverage industry meet the requirements of
- Kosher: Products that are classified as kosher (suitable, pure) according to Jewish dietary laws
- Halāl : Products that are halāl (permissible, permitted) according to Islamic law.
In addition, our products are registered by the NSF (National Sanitation Foundation). The NSF is a US authority for testing the food compatibility of lubricants. As a lubricant manufacturer, we are required to submit all components of our H1 lubricant formulations to the NSF for testing. The relevant NSF certified food grade lubricants can be viewed on the nsfwhitebook.org website.
With the internationally recognized ISO 21469 standard for the food industry, TUNAP meets the strictest hygiene requirements for H1 lubricants and the entire production process including manufacturing, handling, packaging and storage.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), also based in the USA, maintains a list of base oils and additives that may occasionally come into direct contact with food in low concentrations. The FDA has set a limit of 10 mg of lubricant per kilogram of food. This amount also prevents contamination by MOSH/MOAH due to the lubricant used.
Our certifications
Technical requirements for H1 lubricants
In the food industry, specific requirements for lubricants are of great importance.
In addition to hygiene, product safety and certifications, the lubrication of various facilities must be guaranteed:
Systems, conveyor belts, roller and plain bearings, gears, oil circulation systems, chains, mixers, pumps, tanks and pipelines. This is just a selection of the areas involved.
As efficient as conventional lubricants
Machines in food processing plants face similar tribological and lubrication challenges as equipment in non-food processing plants. H1 lubricating greases must offer comparable performance to conventional lubricating greases and be effective even under extreme food processing conditions. They must ensure
provide similar protection of internal surfaces to control friction, wear, corrosion, heat and deposits,
provide good pumpability, oxidation stability, hydrolytic stability and thermal stability in various applications, and
avoid performance degradation in contact with food, certain process chemicals, water and bacteria, particularly in food and pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Advantages of our H1 lubricant solutions
- H1 lubricants improve food safety for consumers.
- They reduce downtimes and maintenance intervals for systems and machines.
- This in turn results in significant time, cost and energy savings.
Mineral oils versus synthetic bases for H1 lubricants
H1-registered lubricant bases can be either mineral or synthetic.
- Mineral oil-based lubricants: These are either technical white mineral oils or USP quality mineral oils. They are highly refined, colorless, tasteless, odorless and do not stain. USP mineral oils are the most highly refined of the white mineral oils.
- Synthetic lubricants: Commonly used synthetic H1 lubricant bases include polyalphaolefins (PAO). Compared to white mineral oils, they have significantly improved oxidation stability and a wider range of operating temperatures. Other approved synthetic H1 base oils are ester oils, polyalkylene glycols (PAG), dimethylpolysiloxane (silicones) and perfluoropolyethers (PFPE). Silicones and perfluoropolyethers have an even higher temperature and oxidation stability compared to other base oils.
